I had the desk for corporate work, the desk and computer for writing work, and all the peripherals… you know: monitors, monitor arms, keyboards, mouse(s), docking station. All the bits. All the stars in alignment for things working smoothly.

But few things disrupt a productive day quite like the sudden failure of a simple piece of technology: a computer mouse. It’s a common annoyance that can throw a wrench into your routine, turning simple tasks into moments of frustration. (I ‘cried’ about it on social media a couple of days later.)

When your trusty mouse stops responding, the immediate fallback is often the laptop’s touchpad, which can lead to its own set of challenges.

The Day My Mouse Stopped Working

Working without a (computer) mouse is possible. I know this because I had to do it Thursday a week ago. But after my computer mouse died, after many, many years and several laptops, it reminded me that ‘possible’ and ‘pleasant’ are very different things.

The mouse had been one of those quiet, dependable tools that slipped into the background of everyday work. Until it stopped working, I barely thought about it. Then, suddenly, every little movement became noticeable.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3436 size-large" src="https://bdabooks.com.au/Blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Aox4P8DF7SCK-1024x572.jpg" alt="A woman wearing a blue sweater sits at a wooden desk, looking frustrated while working on a laptop. That’s how long ago it was. It’d been with me through multiple laptops, countless documents, emails, edits, research sessions and probably more cups of coffee (and tea) than any piece of technology deserves.

It wasn’t fancy. It didn’t have an impressive list of features. It was simply familiar.

My hand knew where it was. My fingers knew how much pressure to use. I knew the small rhythm of moving, clicking, scrolling and dragging without having to think about any of it. The mouse had become part of the furniture of work; not literally, of course, but in the way a favourite pen, notebook or desk chair becomes part of a routine.

That is the strange thing about everyday tools. We tend to notice the glamorous ones: the new laptop, the impressive monitor, the software that promises to transform everything. We don’t usually celebrate the humble objects that quietly help us get through an ordinary Tuesday.

Until one of them dies.

Working Without a Mouse Was Doable, But Only Just

The mouse gave up on Thursday night a week ago. There was no dramatic spark, no cinematic farewell, just the sudden realisation that the cursor wasn’t responding properly and the old faithful had reached the end of its long service.

I couldn’t get out the next day to buy a replacement (and it wasn’t enough of a spend for delivery), so I worked using the laptop’s touchpad instead. Technically, I had everything I needed. A touchpad can handle many of the same basic actions as a mouse, including clicking, scrolling and secondary clicking. (Apple’s Mac documentation treats the two as overlapping but distinct ways of controlling a computer.)

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-3440" src="https://bdabooks.com.au/Blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/photo-1467232004584-a241de8bcf5d-1024x684.jpeg" alt="A modern workspace setup in a dark room featuring two computer monitors on a white desk. I hated it!

The problem wasn’t that the touchpad was incapable. The problem was that my desk is set up around an external monitor. My laptop sits off to the left side, doing its quiet computer work, while the larger screen is directly in front of me. With the mouse, my hand stays in a natural place, and the pointer moves across the screen I’m looking at.

I’m right-hand dominant. Without the mouse, I had to keep reaching across myself to the laptop. Find the touchpad. Move my finger. Look up at the monitor. Move again. Try to select something accurately. Reach back. Repeat. Reaching back to a laptop touchpad while looking at a separate screen added friction to ordinary tasks.

The Touchpad Struggle

It wasn’t impossible. It was just annoying. To say the least. As a primary tool, a touchpad rarely matches the comfort and accuracy of a dedicated mouse. The difference between a touchpad and a mouse is stark, and the frustration is real.

The ‘hiccup’ was disrupting my workflow and increasing touchpad frustration, especially as I tend to rely heavily on precise cursor control. The shift from mouse to touchpad felt like a step backward, as I find the touchpad less intuitive and slower to navigate.

A touchpad can handle many of the same functions, but the physical experience felt completely different.

Working Mouseless Felt So Much Harder with an External Monitor

There’s a difference between being able to complete a task and being able to complete it without constant interruption. Before I surrendered to the frustration of a non-responsive mouse, I ran a few checks to see if my mouse was beyond repair.

Was it plugged in? Were there software culprits?

I started by checking the physical connections. It was a wired mouse, so I double-checked it was ACTUALLY plugged in. HA! As if that hasn’t been a problem before. (Insert snigger here!) I tried different USB ports (AND a different, non-personal, work-related computer) to see if the problem was with the port rather than the mouse itself. (THAT would’ve been a bigger problem!)

I have a ‘relatively old’ computer, six years old, and I regularly need to manually update outdated drivers and the operating system, which can cause a mouse to behave erratically or stop working. I did all that and restarted, but the problem persisted.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3437 size-large" src="https://bdabooks.com.au/Blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Yev5JT427Nuk-1024x572.jpg" alt="An illustrated flowchart titled ‘Mouse Troubleshooting Guide’ showing steps to fix a non-working computer mouse. Every small pointer movement reminded me that my usual setup was missing something. I was still able to open files, move between windows and do the work in front of me. The touchpad wasn’t broken. In fact, the system was functioning exactly as designed.

My workflow, however, had lost its familiar bridge between my hand and the screen.

That’s why working without a mouse felt disproportionately irritating. The individual actions were tiny, but there were so many of them. A few extra reaches. A few more moments of correcting the pointer. A few interruptions to the rhythm of reading, writing and making decisions.

The ‘Touchpad versus Mouse’ Dynamic

Apple’s computer user guide includes separate instructions for mouse gestures and trackpad gestures, which is a useful reminder that these are not merely two versions of the same surface. They ask slightly different things of your hands and attention.

I ‘had to learn’ Macs at university, quite a few years ago, and as an iPhone user, I ‘get’ Apple devices. But I grew up a PC girl and will always be a PC girl… with a mouse attached!

And as I work with an external monitor, the difference becomes even more obvious. The touchpad is attached to the laptop, but your focus is somewhere else. Your hand has to travel to the input device while your eyes remain on the larger display.

Perhaps someone with better touchpad habits would’ve found the whole thing perfectly manageable. I admit that. But after years of using the same mouse, I wasn’t starting from neutral. I was comparing every touchpad gesture with a movement that had become almost automatic.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-3438" src="https://bdabooks.com.au/Blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Cf4Szgx3pVaT-1024x572.jpg" alt="A woman wearing glasses looks frustrated while sitting at a desk with a laptop displaying code and a spreadsheet. But accepting the temporary nature of the setup eased the frustration. I took short breaks, adjusted my workspace ergonomics, and planned tasks that require less precise input to help me navigate this period with less stress until a mouse replacement was available.

A New Mouse Has Entered the Story

I made a detour to the stationery store on the way to the supermarket on Saturday.

It wasn’t an elaborate technology-shopping expedition. I didn’t compare seventeen models or read a dozen reviews.

I simply went in, found the MOST REASONABLY priced wired mouse, picked up milk and bread, and brought it all home.

And now: HUZZAH!

The new mouse is sitting beside me as I write this. It’s doing the very ordinary job I needed it to do. The pointer moves. The clicks happen. The scroll wheel scrolls. My hand is back where it expects to be, and the external monitor once again feels connected to the whole setup.

There is something satisfying about a small ‘fix’ (i.e. replacement) to an ordinary day. Nothing about the wider world has changed. I still have the same work, the same emails, the same documents and the same supermarket trip. But one small source of friction has disappeared.

It made me think about how many tools support our creative lives without asking for attention. A mouse. A keyboard. A good notebook. A pen that does not give up halfway through a sentence. They are not the story, exactly; but they help us tell the story.

The Tools that Help Stories Come to Life

Small tools support creative work. When the right tool is restored, attention can return to the work itself.

The tools behind the work sometimes matter more than we think. My old mouse didn’t produce a manuscript. It didn’t edit a paragraph or dream up a character. But it helped me move through the work for years, across multiple laptops and countless ordinary days.

When it stopped working, I felt the absence immediately.

It feels like a useful little lesson. Creative work is often described as though it depends entirely on inspiration, discipline and big ideas. Those things matter, of course. So do the small systems that make it easier to stay with the work once we sit down.

Integrating a New Tool Is About Removing Friction

A new tool does not have to transform your life to be useful. Sometimes its value is much quieter: it restores a movement, habit or connection that had become part of the way you work. That is what happened when I replaced the mouse. I hadn’t bought a productivity system. I hadn’t optimised my workflow. I had simply replaced one small piece of equipment, and in doing so, restored the rhythm of my desk.

There’s often a temptation to treat every new tool as a solution that must justify itself with dramatic results. We look for faster output, better organisation or some measurable improvement. But integration can be valuable for a more ordinary reason.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-3439" src="https://bdabooks.com.au/Blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/QTdG0nmhcPFB-1024x572.jpg" alt="A person seated at a tidy wooden desk tests several computer mice lined up in a row. The challenge, of course, is knowing whether a new tool is genuinely helping or merely adding another layer of novelty. The answer is usually found in the work itself. Does it reduce unnecessary effort? Does it let your attention return to the task? Does it become quiet enough that you stop thinking about it? My new mouse has already passed that test.

I am no longer thinking about where to reach or how to make the pointer do what I want. I am back to thinking about the sentence in front of me. At the end of the day, integrating a new tool is not always about becoming more productive. Sometimes it is simply about making the work feel possible, comfortable and continuous again. And sometimes, that is more than enough.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes a tool becomes part of the rhythm before we realise it. Sometimes we only understand its value after it stops cooperating. And sometimes the solution is wonderfully simple: make a detour to the stationery store, buy a new mouse, and return to the desk with a relieved little “Huzzah!”

What ordinary tool would you miss most if it stopped working tomorrow?
